Low back pain has always been a major complaint by most patients. However, in recent years neck pains have also been on the increase. This can be attributed partly to the excessive use of mobile phones. Many people today are constantly using a mobile device. Some people are even on their devices for long hours, causing strain on their necks.
As you use your mobile phone, you often look forward and downward. That applies excessive strain to your spine. As you continue to use your mobile phone, you are likely to develop poor postures involving the head, neck and shoulders. As a result, neck pains are bound to be a constant problem that you will encounter.
Your head contributes a substantial portion of your total weight when in a neutral position above your shoulders. When you lean forwards, that weight causes pressure on your spine. The pressure about doubles for every inch you tilt the head from its neutral position with the ears above the shoulders. Thus, from an average weight of about 10 lbs when in a neutral position, the head will exert a pressure equivalent of 20 lbs or more on the spine when you lean forward. Prolonged leaning forward can have massive repercussions on your spine. It can lead to misalignment of the cervical vertebrae as well as the spinal discs.
Technology is good, but its usage can be harmful. While using your mobile device may not be harmful, overusing it may have far-reaching effects. The more time you spend hunched over your phone, the more pressure you apply to your spine and neck muscles. That will cause neck pains and soreness as well as more serious issues to your spine.
You can avoid the neck pains by adopting better phone habits. First, try to hold your phone higher when using it. That minimizes the amount of strain due to leaning forward. Adopting a good posture while using the phone will ensure you suffer less pain. You also need to minimize the amount of time you spend on your phone. The less time you spend on the phone, the lesser the impact and strain on the neck. Thus, you will be able to avoid neck soreness and pain. Lastly, you need to stretch your neck muscles from time to time. After spending time hunched over your phone, you need to take time to stretch and relax your neck muscles. That helps relieve the soreness and pain.
