Telemedicine is the use of medical information exchanged from one site to another via electronic communications to improve a patient’s clinical health status.
Imagine a scenario where doctors from different centers can collaborate on a surgery without having to actually be in the operating room, doctors in remote locations could receive immediate expert support from top specialists around the world.
This cutting edge technology environment has been the reality at The Surgery Center at Doral from its inception, where Dr. Alejandro Badia, Hand and Upper Extremity Surgeon, Founder & Chief of Surgery, has been utilizing the telemedicine system from Stryker since 2008 to initially transmit while performing an endoscopic carpal tunnel release and arthroscopic reconstruction to a group of leading hand surgeons, members of the European Wrist Arthroscopy Society (EWAS) who gathered in Strasbourg, France.
In 2011, Dr. Alejandro Badia performed an arthroscopic surgery from the center to a group of local students from Miami, Florida, at the Medical Academy of Science and Technology at Robert Morgan (MAST) which organized the event as part of its career week.
He later transmitted a live arthroscopy case to a medical conference of orthopedic surgeons from The Surgery Center at Doral to Omni Hospital in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
Today, physicians often need to travel to both examine patients and conduct consultations, given the growing capacity of internet technologies, the development of live remote consultation with high quality video has revolutionize medicine and greatly enhance the care patients can receive while reducing overall costs to the health care systems.
The Miami Science Museum provided students with an experience like no other, Dr. Badia transmited his first live surgical case to the museum this past February 14, 2013. These transmissions give students a glimpse to the world of the latest technology in Telemedicine, allowing them to ask any questions they might have while Dr. Badia walks them through the procedure and the anatomy of the human body. The students are exposed to a side of educational medicine they may otherwise never been exposed to at a young age.
During the transmission, a forty year old patient suffering from triangular fibrocartilage complex tear (TFCC) and trigger finger was intervine, Dr. Badia assisted by Kate Samuels (PA) performed a right wrist arthoscopic triangular fibrocartilage complex debridement and synovectomy as well as a right thumb open A1 pulley release, the surgery took about forty five minutes, patient was later discharged home as it is done in an outpatient surgery setting.
During 2013, there will be several live transmissions scheduled, another transmission to The Science Museum in Miami will be done on March 15, 2013 by Dr. Alejandro Badia and other transmissions will come from our surgical team with live case procedures in orthopedics and sports medicine, ortho spine, general surgery, podiatry, pain management, urology and ENT specialties among others, in an expanded number of remote locations. Our goal is to transfer the technology for use in medical education and actual diagnostic and surgical applications
