Should I Exercise with a Face Mask?

September 18, 2020 by OrthoNOW

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), people should avoid wearing masks while exercising because of the health challenges a mask may pose.

First, a face mask may limit breathing while exercising, resulting in an unnecessary struggle for breath, chest problems, and fatigue. When a face mask becomes damp or wet from sweat, it also becomes easier for microorganisms to seep through and thrive.

The effects of wearing a face mask as you exercise will vary depending on your level of fitness as well as the intensity of the exercise; so individuals who are less fit could face serious breathing difficulties when wearing a face mask while exercising.

The Importance of Good ventilation While Exercising

As you exercise, your body needs additional oxygen compared to when you’re at rest. The limited supply of oxygen resulting from wearing a face mask forces the heart and lungs to work harder to supply this additional oxygen to the body. That may pose several health risks, and it could result in fatigue, lightheadedness, or more serious issues such as cardiac arrest.

Challenging Times Call for Effective Solutions

During the COVID-19 pandemic, it has become normal to wear a face mask, but they do have limits and cannot be worn at all times.

When working out, you’re bound to face breathing challenges if you keep your face mask on, so it’s not advisable to wear a face mask while exercising.

Instead, if at all possible, you should avoid the discomfort and potentially serious health challenges to your body and not wear a face mask during exercise.

Although it is advisable to wear your face mask as a preventative measure against COVID-19, it is not recommended to have your face mask on while exercising. The best measure to keep yourself safe while exercising is to maintain physical distancing.
