Three Injuries to Avoid When Lighting Fireworks

December 12, 2022 by OrthoNOW

Fireworks can be an exciting way to celebrate holidays or special occasions. Unfortunately, though, accidents can happen, especially when lighting off fireworks at home. There are ways you can minimize the safety risk, but every year, thousands of people sustain injuries when their fireworks displays go wrong.

Here are three of the most common fireworks-related injuries:

1. Amputations
Amputations are the most severe consequences of fireworks accidents. Serious injuries may lead to the loss of a finger or thumb. If this happens to you, cover the area with a cloth and keep your hand elevated. If you can locate the lost finger, clean it with saltwater, place it in a waterproof bag, and put the bag on ice before seeking medical immediate medical attention.

2. Fractures and Lacerations
Fireworks can cause cuts, tears, and broken bones in the hands. This typically happens when people handle lit fireworks or pick up a firework that they think is not going to go off. Minor cuts may be treatable at home, but most hand injuries will need medical treatment. If you have a laceration or a broken bone, apply ice and keep your hand raised until you get help. OrthoNOW can help in most cases, and an immediate telemedicine visit with one of our expert clinicians can help you determine next steps.

3. Burns
Burns are the most common injury resulting from fireworks accidents. They’re especially common on the hands and fingers, but you could sustain burns on any area of your body. Burns can also range from mild to severe. Minor burns lead to redness and discomfort but can usually be treated with ice and over-the-counter pain relievers. Major burns, on the other hand, can cause serious tissue damage and always need medical intervention.

You can reduce the risk of burns by never picking up a lit firework. Have a source of water nearby in case you need to put out a fire or quickly cool down a burn. OrthoNOW can often help with burns, depending on the severity.

Some fireworks injuries just cause minor pain or discomfort, but others result in permanent health issues. You can reduce your risk of an injury by using protective gear, staying far away from the fireworks when possible, and lighting them according to their instructions.

Safety Tips When Using Fireworks

According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, you may follow these safety tips to prevent injuries when using fireworks.

Why Would I Go to an Orthopedic Urgent Care Over an ER or General Urgent Care?

Angela Villada states,

At OrthoNOW we take care of those orthopedic needs right away, avoiding the wasted time, expenses, additional claims, and additional price,” of a general urgent care or ER.”
